How do you choose the right shed plans when there are so many plans available on the internet today? Whether you are a seasoned handyman or if you’ve never picked up a hammer before, doesn’t matter much. But there are some basic characteristics that a good set of plans for wooden sheds will have that you should be aware of.
If the plans are easy to follow, then they are probably the best plans to get and were made by someone in your shoes. Written instructions should be step-by-step and clearly walk you through the construction process. There are a lot of shed plans that simply include elevation views along with their measurements and that’s about all. This type of plan assumes that the builder has experience with woodworking and building but doesn’t help the average person much.
So, it’s important to look for plans that indicate they have detailed instructions. As well as clear elevation drawings (every plan should have this at minimum), three-dimensional or cutaway drawings will also help give you an understanding of how construction should be done.
Some shed plans will include exploded views of the more intricate areas that need special attention. Although not critical, another great aspect in the drawings is to have color or shading. This really helps to visualize how pieces are put together and which piece goes on top or under another piece.
Illustrations and/or photos that depict the wooden shed at different stages of being constructed or completed are also a great feature to have.
And, lastly, a complete materials list included in the shed plans is another feature to look for. When you are at the supply store picking up all the materials you need, you don’t want to go blind or guessing then its really not necessary.
The good thing is, you can find some great shed plans online. Knowing what to look for is the real trick.
