If you think building your own storage shed may be beyond your ability, you’re in for a real surprise. In fact, by using a set of really simple plans, along with a little elbow grease, almost anyone can build a high quality storage shed while saving hundreds of dollars in the process.  Even thousands over time.

Sure, having some basic carpentry skills and a little do-it-yourself ability are helpful but neither is mandatory. In fact, if you can read, draw a straight line and drive a nail with a hammer, you’ve got all the ability you need.

So if you’ve been thinking about a storage shed for your backyard, here’s a way to save a lot of money using a set of simple plans, while creating a little challenge and adventure in your life at the same time.  Now, here are the three steps to building your own Storage Shed:

Step #1 – Size

Deciding on the size of your storage shed is the critical first step. So take a quick inventory of the all the things you plan to place in storage. Then take a general measurement of the largest items. By that I mean the heaviest and the bulkiest. If you’re storing several large items (like trunks, furniture, equipment, etc.) you’ll want to keep these things on the ground floor for easy access, while the lighter items can be stacked, hung from perimeter shelving or ceiling rafters. After you make a rough estimate of how much floor space you’ll need, add about 15-20% for future growth and circulation. And don’t forget, you can turn some of these items on their sides to conserve space.

Step #2 – Tools

Saving money and having fun are the primary goals for building your own storage shed, so using the right tools are critical. Without the right tools the task can quickly become strenuous and burdensome. And that’s easily avoidable. The tools you need are not only commonplace, they’re inexpensive. A measuring tape, a 3′ level, a building square, a hammer and a skill saw are the primary tools you’ll need.  If these tools aren’t currently in your tool chest you can pick them up at your neighborhood hardware store.  Or if you really want a bargain, check with your local pawn shop. You’ll find these items are plentiful in almost every pawn shop in town.

Step #3 – Plans

Unless you’re gifted with a great sense of artistic vision, you’ll really benefit from a good set of simple plans. Not only will these plans save you a great deal of time and money, but you’ll also need them for any local licensing or permitting requirements. A set of plans is like a cooking recipe. The quality of the final product can vary greatly from one set of plans to another, so finding a simple yet comprehensive set of plans is vital.  They will leave nothing to chance, and you’ll have a lot of fun in the process.
