1. Build a strong, solid foundation. Most folks who have not built anything like this before will panic at the thoughts of laying a foundation. Storage shed designs come in all different sizes but even the smallest ones need to have a firm base to rest on. Anything smaller than a 10 x 12 may get away with a raised block platform but anything bigger should be sitting on a solid base of infill and concrete. Make sure you have a good 4 inches of concrete above the fill, that extra inch of concrete could save you serious cracks in future.

2. Keep your shed narrow and tall. Design your own shed to suit the space you have available but more importantly, to suit your individual needs. If you have not got a lot of space free, shed plans should reflect this by providing a usable roof space. There are certain roofs that are designed for the purpose of storage so you should make an effort to research carefully before you begin building. Having a long narrow shed is very effective for storage, laid out with a block of space to one side and enough room for a walkway. This should be avoided though if you plan on using the shed as a work space in the future.
